MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS, JUL 21 – Gita Gopinath is leaving the IMF after nearly seven years, where she led during major crises including COVID-19, to become Harvard's inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics.
- On July 22, 2025, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced Gita Gopinath will leave the Fund at the end of August, returning to Harvard as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics.
- Having taught at Harvard since 2005, Gita Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019 as its first woman chief economist and was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022.
