The Dutch far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) not only continues to oppose the release of prisoners before the end of their sentences, but has now proposed increasing the number of prisoners in one cell to eight, even if that means, as they stated, they would have to sleep standing up, Dutch media reported today.

The Parliamentary debate about a possible reduction in sentences and the shortage of cells in prisons in the Netherlands has led to a fierce confrontation between PVV MP Emiel van Dijk and JA21 party leader Joost Eerdmans. Van Dijk suggested putting criminals in a cell with eight men and letting them sleep while standing. Eerdmans reacted furiously and compared the proposal with methods from Auschwitz.
