Forbidden Stories: In Gaza, Ukraine and worldwide, 'it's a global war against access to information'
- On October 9, 2024, Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi al-Wahidi was shot in Jabalia, Gaza Strip, during an Israeli attack while reporting on the displacement of Palestinian families.
- Al-Wahidi, along with five other journalists who were wearing press vests and standing in broad daylight in a yellow zone, stated they were directly targeted while being approximately 650 meters outside the evacuation zone.
- The single bullet entered al-Wahidi's neck and damaged his upper vertebrae, leaving him unable to move his lower body, and required multiple surgeries in Gaza, Cairo, and Doha.
- Since October 2023, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 165 to over 200 Palestinian journalists according to CPJ and Reporters Without Borders, making it the deadliest period for journalists since 1992, with Reporters Without Borders filing complaints with the International Criminal Court accusing Israel of war crimes against journalists.
- The Israeli military has denied deliberately targeting journalists, sometimes accusing them of connections to militant groups without providing substantiated evidence, while press freedom organizations and journalists in Gaza feel reporters are being unfairly labeled as terrorists amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis and destruction, with over 50,000 Palestinians killed and almost 300,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
