Friday deadline for Democrats to return to Texas approaches
TRAVIS COUNTY, TEXAS, AUG 8 – Governor Abbott seeks to remove Rep. Gene Wu after more than 50 Democrats fled Texas to block a GOP redistricting bill adding five Republican seats, escalating a partisan standoff.
- On Aug. 6, Texas governor Greg Abbott sued House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Gene Wu, alleging abandonment of duties and seeking his removal from office.
- Amid a quorum-breaking stunt on August 1-2, 2025, 56 Texas House Democrats staged a walkout, halting a vote that could add five GOP seats.
- Following the quorum break, Burrows ordered that absentees must pick up paychecks in person, reserved 30% of office budgets, and imposed a $500 daily fine.
