FKA Twigs to Play Josephine Baker in Biopic
The biopic has the blessing of Baker’s surviving sons and will launch international sales at Cannes before shooting begins in the fall.
Grammy-Winning singer FKA Twigs will portray Jazz Age legend Josephine Baker in a Studiocanal biopic written and directed by French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré. The project marks her most challenging acting role to date.
Born in St. Louis in 1906, Baker rose to fame in Paris after moving there in 1925, later serving in the French Resistance and supporting the American Civil Rights Movement. She raised 12 adopted children called the 'Rainbow Tribe'.
Studiocanal and Bien ou Bien Productions are financing the film with support from Baker's estate, including sons Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker. Director Doucouré said she aims to explore "her contradictions, her wounds and her immense courage."
Starting Tuesday, Studiocanal will launch worldwide sales at the Cannes Film Festival, with subsidiaries handling theatrical distribution across France, the U.K., Germany, Italy, Benelux, Poland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Despite repeated screen attempts including a 1991 Emmy-winning telefilm, this project is the first major film to have Baker's estate blessing. Shooting is scheduled for the fall, with the production aiming to capture her relentless fight for justice.
