First on CNN: Newly unsealed footage shows Luigi Mangione’s arrest
The footage shows officers recovering a gun, fake ID and notebook from Mangione’s backpack after his arrest, CNN reported.
Newly unsealed body-cam footage shows the December 9, 2024, arrest of Luigi Mangione at an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald's, five days after the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Videos obtained by CNN depict officers questioning and apprehending Mangione.
Officers quickly identified Mangione after he initially provided police with a fake ID bearing the name Mark Rosario, the same name prosecutors say the shooting suspect used to check into a New York City hostel prior to Thompson.
Footage captures police searching Mangione's backpack at the station, where officers recovered a firearm, a silencer, and a notebook prosecutors described as a "manifesto." These items became key evidence in the case.
New York State Judge Gregory Carro authorized the videos' release following Mangione's federal guilty plea in August, having previously ruled most evidence from the contested backpack search admissible for trial.
Mangione faces both federal and state murder charges and has pleaded not guilty in both cases. His state homicide trial is scheduled to begin September 8, with defense attorneys seeking to dismiss the case on double jeopardy grounds.
