Trump admin cancels multiple citizenship ceremonies in New York, claiming unmet legal requirements

USCIS found some New York county courts noncompliant with the Immigration and Nationality Act, affecting ceremonies for up to 40 new citizens per event, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ordered at least seven New York counties including Westchester and Rockland to cancel judicial naturalization ceremonies after a review under the Immigration and Nationality Act found courts did not meet requirements, and it will shift to administrative ceremonies.
  • Earlier this month, federal officials canceled a November 19 ceremony, first called off on November 6, after USCIS said prospective naturalized citizens must be lawful permanent residents for at least five years.
  • Onondaga County, New York, holds four naturalization ceremonies per year with around 25 to 40 people each, while federal ceremonies in Syracuse continue twice monthly, last on September 11.
  • The change leaves many applicants facing hurdles, with Congressman Mike Lawler writing `Stealing that same joy is wrong`.
  • Next month, two Syracuse ceremonies on Dec. 11 and Dec. 18 remain scheduled, while USCIS instructed Tompkins County, New York to cancel three ceremonies planned for next year, and New York Attorney General Letitia James has demanded written answers.
