After Plenty of Ups and Downs, Osaka Expo Concludes with Message of Unity

The Expo surpassed the 2005 Aichi attendance by 3 million visitors and is expected to generate an operating surplus of up to 28 billion yen, organizers said.

  • On Monday, the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo concluded its six-month run, drawing a provisional total of 25,077,601 visitors as reported by the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition.
  • After the Golden Week holidays, daily visitors began to exceed 100,000, and since Sept. 12, attendance surged to over 200,000 per day for 30 consecutive days.
  • A total of 22.07 million tickets were sold and licensed merchandise generated about 80 billion yen in sales as of late August, while organizers expect an operating surplus of up to 28 billion yen.
  • Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said it `got a passing grade` on Thursday and gave the expo top marks on Monday, noting no major accident occurred.
  • Despite falling short of the 28 million target, construction costs rose to 235 billion yen after two increases, with 158 countries participating and the flag to be handed to Saudi Arabia.
