Explosive device goes off in a Damascus cafe, killing at least 4 people
Authorities said an explosive device caused the blast, and investigators are examining possible militant involvement after no group claimed responsibility.
On Thursday, July 2, 2026, an explosive device detonated at a cafe near the Palace of Justice in central Damascus, killing nine people and wounding 20 others, authorities said.
Preliminary investigations by the Interior Ministry indicate the blast was caused by a "primitive" explosive device packed with metal shrapnel, complicating stabilization efforts in the capital.
Shop owner Mohammed al-Dahabi told AFP he "felt strong pressure" before seeing people lying on the floor with blood pooled around them everywhere, recalling blasts from the civil war.
Damascus Governor Maher Idlibi vowed that "those responsible for this bloodshed will be punished," while UN deputy special envoy Claudio Cordone stated perpetrators "should be brought to justice."
While no group claimed responsibility, security officials noted that Islamic State has been reactivating sleeper cells and recruiting fighters to exploit security vacuums since the 2024 change of power.
The death toll from last Thursday's explosion of a home artifact, approximately one kilogram, placed in a cafeteria near Damascus's Justice Palace (Syria) rose to 9, while the number of injured was 20, according to official sources from the Ministry of the Interior.
