Tsunami Evacuations Ordered in South America, Worst Risk Passes for U.S.
SOUTH AMERICA, JUL 30 – Evacuations in Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador followed tsunami warnings after the 8.7 magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, with waves up to six metres recorded, officials said.
- On Wednesday, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the coast of New Zealand about 9600 kilometers away triggered tsunami alerts and evacuations along South America’s Pacific coast.
- The shock occurred along the 'Ring of Fire,' a series of seismic faults around the Pacific, with no mention of it being the strongest since 2011.
- Along New Zealand’s coastlines about 9600 kilometers from the epicentre, strong currents and surges were felt, following multiple aftershocks as strong as 6.9 magnitude, Russia’s Oceanology Institute reported.
- Authorities in Chile raised alerts to the highest level, evacuating hundreds along the Pacific coast, while Colombian officials ordered beach and low-tide area evacuations, and Ecuador canceled coastal and Galapagos schools on Wednesday.
- Moving forward, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency urged residents, `'As you return home, still stay off the beach and stay out of the water,'` as advisories continue for northern California through Thursday morning.
