TRNC Rejects EU Cyprus Envoy Appointment, Calls for Equal Status in Settlement Talks
The move signals stronger EU backing for UN-led reunification talks as Cyprus and the United Nations prepare for a new round of diplomacy.
On Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen appointed Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the European Union's special representative for Cyprus, signaling increased EU involvement in reunification efforts.
The role remained vacant since March 23 following the resignation of former European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn; Von der Leyen noted "renewed momentum" for a settlement, declaring "this opportunity should be seized."
President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the decision, stating the appointment gives "particular political weight to this common effort" and credited the move to his government's strategic push for deeper EU engagement.
An enlarged meeting on Cyprus takes place this week in New York under United Nations auspices, where officials note that EU-Turkey relations remain linked to reunification progress.
The European Commission stands ready to support the process "with all the necessary assistance and the tools at its disposal," as the EU signals readiness to back the UNSG's latest initiative.
The Commission is strengthening its presence in the negotiations ahead of the informal 5+1 conference, while Nicosia seeks to link the Cyprus issue with Euro-Turkish relations
