Ethereum researcher's AI security warning stirs debate as bitcoin extends slide: Crypto Markets Today
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the industry to "calmly begin planning" for "bunker mode," a controlled shift of holdings to new addresses whose public keys stay hidden behind a hash, in a post viewed almost 4 million times.
Drake argued that AI-driven mathematical advances make it reasonable to brace for a break of ECDSA signatures securing Bitcoin and Ether wallets in "months not years," citing a batch of 722 mathematical results released by OpenAI this week.
Critics pushed back, with Helius's Mert Mumtaz calling the suggestion "an unnecessarily performative post," while Coinbase cryptography lead Yehuda Lindell said there is "no evidence whatsoever pointing to a break of decades old hardness assumptions."
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin advised against scrambling to move funds today, though he acknowledged AI-accelerated math risks should be taken seriously, cautioning that mass migration could create operational mistakes risking fund loss.
Some networks promoting quantum-resistant cryptography saw gains following the post, while Jacob Creech argued Solana users do not need bunker mode because its keys derive from a hashed seed never exposed onchain.
🚨 Jameson Lopp said the fear that AI will break Bitcoin encryption in the short term is exaggerated.
📌 Lopp argued that the real risk lies in software and wallet errors within the $BTC ecosystem.
🤖 Justin Drake and Haseeb Qureshi suggested that new models could create a risk for ECDSA measured in months. 🔐 To date, no confirmed incident of active ECDSA keys being cracked has been recorded.
