Duck on Mend After Found with Arrow Through Its Bill at Massachusetts Pond
Rescuers expect the well-known mallard to fully recover and return to the pond after the bolt was removed, officials said.
On Tuesday, rescuers captured Horace, a mallard well known along the river in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, to remove a crossbow bolt lodged in his bill.
A Salem resident alerted Newhouse to the duck's plight after spotting him near a pond with the bolt embedded in his beak over the last couple of days.
Steven Salowsky and Jane captured the mallard using nets in the river; Salowsky described the injury as "completely superficial" and "right by the nostrils," with the arrow sliding out after lubrication.
Horace is expected to make a full recovery and will be released back to the pond where he was originally found, Newhouse confirmed.
Newhouse regularly rehabilitates hundreds of animals, including a beaver rescued just last month that was trapped below a dam with infection and is now healthy and ready for release.
