Gardaí are reviewing CCTV and dash-cam footage as witnesses are sought after 21-year-old Qayyum Balogun died following the assault.
On Monday, June 1, 2026, 21-year-old Qayyum Balogun died after being fatally stabbed near Grafton Street in Dublin's early hours, prompting Gardaí to launch a murder investigation and appeal for public assistance.
Following a concert at Bewley's Cafe, Balogun was targeted in a dispute between rival groups and chased about 100 metres to Clarendon Street, where he was stabbed multiple times including a fatal chest wound.
Mother Teslimot Balogun and stepmother Loveth Patrick described him as "one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet, gentle, calm," expressing "unbelievable shock" at his loss on Tuesday evening.
Labour Councillor Dermot Lacey, Chair of local community safety partnerships, urged the judiciary to strengthen knife-carrying penalties, warning that "low-level crime, antisocial behaviour" spirals into greater violence.
Community groups including Africa Solidarity Centre Ireland called for a "thorough, independent, transparent and timely investigation," as public debate intensifies over collective responsibility and preventative measures in Dublin.
