Idaho coalition joins lawsuit challenging changes to federal housing and violence prevention grant policies
PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, JUL 21 – Seventeen organizations say new federal funding rules force them to restrict support for vulnerable groups and violate constitutional rights, risking critical services nationwide.
- In U.S. District Court in Providence, more than 20 nonprofit organizations filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over funding restrictions affecting domestic violence and sexual assault programs.
- Amid new grant guidelines, the administration barred funding for programs promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, gender ideology, or abortion rights, affecting grants like the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act and the Continuum of Care Program.
- Plaintiffs are joined by groups in the District of Columbia and 13 states, including Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Violence Free Minnesota.
- The plaintiffs asked the court to vacate the new eligibility requirements and sought a temporary restraining order against HHS to preserve funding for programs.
- It is devastating and will put lives at risk, Lucy Rios, executive director of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said, warning that without federal funds individuals face returning to the street and losing access to basic necessities.
