Dismay over New Plans to House Asylum Seekers at Former RAF Base in North Yorkshire
The government says closing 20 hotels and moving people to large sites will save taxpayers £170 million this financial year.
The Home Office announced plans to house up to 3,750 migrants across three Ministry of Defence sites, including RAF Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire, Bicester in Oxfordshire, and Barnham in Suffolk, aiming to end reliance on asylum hotels.
Minister for Border Security and Asylum Alex Norris stated that 20 hotels have closed across England as the government transitions asylum seekers into "basic" accommodation to return properties to communities.
Conservative MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke and North Yorkshire Council leader Councillor Carl Les criticized the announcement, stating the Home Office consulted neither constituency MPs nor local authorities in advance.
Parish council chairman Marc Goddard noted the village has around 700 residents and argued it cannot support 1,200 men, stating "this is a camp beside a village where there are no services or facilities."
Community leaders have vowed to "campaign to the end" against the proposal, echoing successful 2022 opposition that halted similar plans for the former base. Local officials are seeking meetings with government officials to discuss concerns.
