Is Cuba leaving the supply book system? Apparently, the network of state wineries is being dismantled without any official notice, so Cubans have had to resort to neighborhood shops, which do not manage the subsidized prices they are used to paying and where they hardly have enough money to buy products.
In recent days Cubans have been unable to acquire anything through the notebook, without the Government openly recognizing their departure from circulation.
Established in 1963 by Fidel Castro, the system represented a cost of $1 billion a year before its gradual erosion in recent years
A tour of the Cuban capital by AFP found closed or converted establishments and consumers who have not received subsidized products for days. For pensioners and poor families, the gradual disappearance means losing a minimum aid that for decades amortized the shortage.
Sixty years later, the notebook with which a million Cubans bought pre-subsidized products is about to disappear. The neighborhood markets gradually replace the grocery stores where before circulated this notebook, a symbol of the equality that revolutionized it in 1959 wanted to impose. Read more (10/06/2026
