- On Sunday night, Dame Stella Rimington, former Director General of MI5, died at the age of 90, her family announced.
- In 1969, Rimington joined MI5 full time after working as a part-time clerk typist in New Delhi, advancing to director of each operational branch before becoming deputy director general in 1991 and director general.
- Between 1992 and 1996, Rimington led MI5 as its first female director general and first public appointee, and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 1996 New Year Honours.
- Her family said she died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and held on to the life she loved until her last breath.
