China moves to curb tech exports, including AI, citing national security risks
The draft covers 23 AI technologies and could block models above 2 trillion parameters, as officials cite national security.
China announced plans on Friday to restrict or ban exports of 40 technologies spanning artificial intelligence, chips, and solar power as its technology race with the United States intensifies.
United States-led restrictions have curbed the export of advanced technologies to China over the past years, blocking the country from accessing the world's most cutting-edge AI chips and chipmaking machines.
The Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology published a draft list including 23 AI technologies, 12 solar-related technologies, and five biomedicine technologies, targeting AI models exceeding 2 trillion parameters.
Omdia analyst Lian Jye said the move "can be seen as a response to Western countries" posting sovereignty requirements on key technologies, aiming to better regulate access to Chinese innovations.
Dialogue between the United States and China has advanced, yielding a notification mechanism for AI incidents that could threaten national security between the two superpowers.
