China imposes export controls on 20 Japanese entities to curb ‘remilitarisation’

China banned dual-use exports to 20 Japanese defense firms and placed 20 more under stricter review, citing national security and Japan's military ambitions, officials said.

  • On Feb 24, China's Commerce Ministry added 20 Japanese defence-related entities to its export control list, banning dual-use items exports to them and barring foreign firms from supplying China-origin goods.
  • In the background, Beijing linked the curbs to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's November remarks on Taiwan and her party's landslide win earlier this month.
  • Separately, Beijing put a watchlist on 20 Japanese firms, including Subaru and TDK, requiring stricter export reviews and end-use pledges, according to the Commerce Ministry.
  • Market data showed shares of several targeted firms fell on the Tokyo Stock Exchange while the Yen dipped 0.4% to 155.27 per US dollar, and Chinese tourists declined 61% in January.
  • Tokyo signalled a response, with a Japanese trade official saying it would "take appropriate measures" after analysing the curbs, while China's Commerce Ministry assurances stressed the measures target few entities and will not affect normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Japan.
