Officials: Winds up to 100 Mph Triggered Geneva Lake Boating Tragedy that Claimed Lives of 3 Children
Preliminary findings say the children drowned after a large wave rolled the boat and sent 10 occupants into the water, police said.
On Friday, July 3, a 25-foot recreational boat carrying 10 people capsized on Geneva Lake during a severe storm, resulting in three children drowning.
The storm packed winds of 90 to 100 mph across Walworth County, rapidly producing hazardous boating conditions that overwhelmed the vessel as it attempted to reach safe harbor.
While seven passengers were rescued by emergency responders, divers located the three children—a 6-year-old boy, 7-year-old girl, and 10-year-old girl—inside the sunken vessel in 32 feet of water.
Geneva Lake police confirmed Monday that the three children suffered no external injuries and died from drowning, according to preliminary investigation findings.
Widespread storm damage persists across southern Wisconsin, with Alliant Energy reporting over 1,000 customers still without power three days after the incident; local officials advise residents to dial 211 to report damage.
