Netflix Strikes Deal To Develop ‘Catan’ Game Into Film And Television Projects
Netflix secured global rights to develop multiple Catan adaptations including films, TV series, and animation, based on the game’s 45 million copies sold worldwide.
- Netflix struck a deal with Asmodee to secure exclusive global rights to Catan and will develop multiple film and television projects, the companies announced Tuesday.
- Having sold over 45 million copies and translated into more than 40 languages, Catan has connected families for three decades since Klaus Teuber released it in 1995.
- Under the pact, Netflix will develop live-action and animated films, scripted and unscripted series and video games based on Catan, produced by Darren Kyman, Pete Fenlon, Guido and Benjamin Teuber, and Roy Lee, with CAA and Goodman Genow negotiating.
- The companies say the adaptations will bring Catan's world to life for longtime Settlers and new fans, expanding the brand to larger audiences.
- In recent years, video-game adaptations have generally been a safe financial bet despite flops like Borderlands, with hits including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie.
