Canadians support arrival of more Chinese electric vehicles, poll suggests

A Leger poll shows 61% of Canadians support more Chinese electric vehicles despite concerns about quality, industry impact, and U.S. retaliation, with awareness higher among men and older adults.

  • The poll, conducted Jan. 30–Feb. 2, found 60% of Canadians supported allowing more Chinese electric vehicles into Canada, according to Leger polling. The report was first published Feb. 4, 2026.
  • Ottawa pledged to cut tariffs on Chinese-made EVs from 100 to 6.1 percent, applying to 49,000 vehicles annually and linked to reciprocal cuts for Canadian agricultural exports.
  • Despite majority support, three-quarters of respondents had concerns, citing vehicle quality and effects on the Canadian auto industry; support was 72 per cent in Quebec and 30 per cent were not concerned about U.S. blowback, said Steve Mossop.
  • Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne told a House of Commons committee his office is researching data collected by connected devices, while GM CEO Mary Barra called the move a "slippery slope" and Ontario Premier Doug Ford raised spying concerns.
  • The move could encourage Chinese manufacturers to consider Canada, as the exemption for Chinese EVs represents roughly 3 percent of last year's nearly two million new cars in Canada, with by 2030 price-cap rules requiring about half of eligible imports to have MSRPs around $26,000.
