- On Monday just after 7 p.m., a REACH Air Medical helicopter experienced an in-air emergency and crashed upside-down on the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento, creating a large debris field and closing lanes.
- Having delivered a patient, the helicopter was returning to its dispatch location when it experienced an in-air emergency Monday, REACH Air Medical said there was no patient on board.
- Responders and bystanders, including a small crew from the Sacramento Fire Department and approximately 15 bystanders, pushed the helicopter off the trapped woman to get her into an ambulance.
- Medical crew members—a pilot, nurse and paramedic—were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, while highway bystanders escaped injury despite the helicopter crashing in the center of the road.
- Authorities said the cause is under investigation as emergency crews and California Highway Patrol remained on scene, REACH Air Medical said it is keeping those impacted in its thoughts and prayers, and Sacramento City Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan reported plumes of white smoke.
