Community 'Devastated' After Boy, 15, Dies in Lough Ree
A search operation recovered the teenager from the water, and Gardaí said a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, a 15-year-old boy, Martin Greene, died after being recovered from the water at Lough Ree in Co. Westmeath. Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of difficulty at Carnakilla Point, Glasson, shortly after 7:30 PM.
Following reports of someone in distress, Gardaí and emergency teams launched a search operation at Carnakilla Point. Martin was recovered from the lake a short time later and pronounced dead at the scene.
St Francis FC in Athlone expressed the club was "utterly devastated" upon learning of Martin's passing. The club stated Martin was "a polite, respectful and a lovely young man" who served as team captain.
The teenager's remains were transferred to the mortuary at Mullingar Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged. Authorities confirmed a file will be prepared for the Coroner regarding the incident.
A death notice confirmed Martin was "predeceased by his beloved father John," while his mother, Yvonne, shared her anguish on social media. Teammates invoked Liverpool's motto: "You'll never walk alone.
