Bird flu virus could risk pandemic worse than COVID if it mutates, France's Institut Pasteur says
Nearly 1,000 human outbreaks with 48% fatality recorded since 2003, and no existing antibodies against H5 strains raise concerns of severe pandemic risk, Institut Pasteur warns.
- This month, France's Institut Pasteur warned the bird flu could cause a pandemic worse than COVID if it mutates to transmit between humans, Dr Marie-Anne Rameix-Welti said.
- Spread among wild birds, poultry and mammals has prompted culling of hundreds of millions of birds, disrupting food supplies and raising prices worldwide.
- WHO data show nearly 1,000 human outbreaks between 2003 and 2025, mainly in Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam, with 48% fatal; a first-ever human H5N5 case in Washington state this month resulted in the patient's death last week.
- WOAH officials caution that the risk of a human pandemic remains very low, but experts and authorities say preparedness and early response are essential.
- People lack antibodies to H5 strains, and unlike COVID-19, flu viruses can kill healthy individuals including children, raising severity concerns.

With the multiplication of avian influenza in animals, including mammals, the risk of spread in humans is increasing.
