'Mass Casualty Incident' Declared at Big Boy Train Stop After Dozens Treated for Heat Illnesses in Pennsylvania
EMS crews treated more than 100 people, and about 45 were taken to hospitals after spectators waited for hours in triple-digit heat, officials said.
On Thursday, more than 100 people suffered heat-related illnesses at the Reading & Northern Railroad Outer Station in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, while gathered to view the historic Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 locomotive.
Temperatures reached around 103 degrees as crowds gathered to see the 133-foot, 1.2-million-pound Big Boy locomotive during its nationwide tour commemorating America's 250th anniversary.
Western Berks Ambulance Association CEO Anthony Tucci confirmed 45 patients were transported to local hospitals; one person suffered cardiac arrest but was resuscitated before hospitalization.
Authorities declared a mass casualty incident as ambulances from four counties responded to assist with the surge of victims at the Reading Outer Station beginning around 1:30 p.m.
The locomotive is scheduled to depart King of Prussia on Friday, traveling along the Schuylkill to the Navy Yard for public displays on July 4 and 5.
