Belgium's Liege airport temporarily halted again due to drone sighting

  • Around 6.30am GMT, Brussels Airport briefly closed after a reported drone sighting, with unidentified drone operators prompting about a 30-minute shutdown, Skeyes air traffic control service said.
  • Belgium's Defence Minister Theo Francken on Tuesday said the flights appeared carried out by professionals intent on destabilising the country, and authorities linked the incidents to Moscow's 'hybrid warfare' campaign.
  • On Thursday, Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport saw drones just before 5pm GMT, forcing over a dozen flights rerouted or canceled, while Liege airport halted flights again and Kleine Brogel air base faced two airspace penetrations on Saturday and Sunday nights.
  • Poland and Romania announced deployment of the American-made Merops system, compact enough for a mid-sized pickup truck, to counter Russian drones using AI to navigate despite jamming.
  • Last month, several drones were spotted above another Belgian military base near the German border, as sightings caused major disruptions across European airports and military bases.
