- On Wednesday, the National Sports Governance Bill will be introduced in Parliament, and the sports ministry source confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will come under the Bill, impacting its governance autonomy.
- The long-awaited legislation seeks to institutionalise a framework for sports governance, aiming for transparency, accountability, and dispute reduction across NSFs including the BCCI.
- The Tribunal, tasked with resolving sports disputes, is mandated to provide independent, speedy, effective, and cost-efficient disposal of sports-related disputes, with over 350 ministry court cases pending and all NSFs required to establish Athletes’ Committees.
- With a Union Sports Ministry source, the Bill applies to the BCCI while the government acts as facilitator and Roger Binny can serve three more years.
- Amid India’s bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, this step is seen as crucial, and the Bill explicitly aligns with the Olympic Charter, with the IOC feeling that good work has been done in framing it.
