Aussie Bar Investigated Under New Hate Laws over 'Satirical' Posters

ACT Police seized five satirical posters showing world leaders in Nazi-like uniforms at a Canberra bar and declared it a crime scene under new Commonwealth hate-symbol laws.

  • On Feb 19, ACT Policing declared Dissent Cafe and Bar a crime scene, seized five posters, and closed the venue in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, police said.
  • Because of a public complaint, ACT Policing responded after officers attended on Feb 18 and asked the owner to remove the posters under legislation passed after Dec 14.
  • The posters by UK artist Blam showed five images of Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance and Elon Musk in Nazi-like uniforms, described by owner David Howe as satirical and anti-fascist.
  • As a result, the venue closed and patrons were removed after police seized five posters, with police seeking legal advice and considering prosecution, Deputy Chief Paula Hudson said.
