Boat carrying migrants capsizes off the coast of the Dominican Republic killing at least 4 people
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, JUL 12 – Four migrants died and about 20 remain missing after a boat capsized; 17 survivors were rescued amid ongoing risky crossings to Puerto Rico, authorities said.
- On July 12, 2025, a boat carrying approximately 40 migrants overturned near the Dominican Republic's eastern shore, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals.
- The migrants, mainly Dominicans and Haitians, were attempting to travel illegally to Puerto Rico, a United States territory, amid rising sea crossings in recent years.
- Seventeen people, including a child, were rescued and given medical care while search efforts continued to find about 20 missing individuals amid difficult conditions.
- Juan Salas, the civil defence director, explained that turbulent seas, extensive sargassum seaweed, and Sahara dust storms were obstructing the search operations as the boat sank at a depth between 500 and 600 meters.
- The incident highlights the growing and dangerous trend of irregular migration by yola boats, often unsafe, with migrants paying up to $7,000 for the risky trip to Puerto Rico.
