At Least 11 Killed After Avalanche Hits Climbers in Russia’s North Caucasus
Rescuers searched for six missing climbers as 56 personnel worked in difficult terrain and officials investigated whether glacier ice triggered the slide.
- On Sunday, an avalanche struck a group of 33 climbers on Mount Mizhirgi in the Kabardino-Balkaria region, killing at least 11 people and injuring six others, according to local emergency services.

An avalanche swept away a 33-member team of Russian security forces' special forces during a training exercise. Thirteen people were killed in the accident. According to reports, 12 of those killed in the avalanche were soldiers from the National Guard's special forces, the Vityaz Special Purpose Group, while several people are still missing.
In the accident in the Bezengi Gorge, 13 people died, five went missing, and ten were hospitalized.
Six people were injured, but there are also members of the climbing team whose condition is unknown.
