Northeast Floods: 16,000 Affected In Assam, Rail Services Hit As IMD Issues Red Alert For Arunachal
The Northeast Frontier Railway suspended the Murkongselek-Silapathar line as erosion damaged a bridge pier and nearly 16,000 people were affected in Dhemaji, officials said.
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, a railway bridge between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations in Dhemaji, Assam, collapsed following heavy riverbank erosion, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway to suspend train services on the route.
Torrential rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam triggered flash floods, causing the Brahmaputra River to rise significantly and erode the riverbank, destabilizing the bridge pier.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority , 22,124 people across six districts have been affected by the flooding, with floodwaters inundating 96 villages and damaging nearly 1,690 hectares of agricultural land.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to coordinate relief efforts, while the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force intensified rescue operations.
The India Meteorological Department warned that heavy rainfall will likely continue across Northeast India, heightening risks of further flooding and infrastructure damage in the coming days.
