Leiden will be completely transformed on Friday as the city celebrates the annual Relief of Leiden. October 3rd is the traditional day to commemorate Leiden's liberation from the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War. And it's happening with all the trimmings. Reporter Jeroen Holtrop joined the festivities for Nieuws van de dag and investigated how strongly these traditions are still alive.
"It's so much fun to be here. A stark contrast to where I was two days ago... playing in Ibiza," laughs Armin van Buuren. The world-famous DJ has briefly traded the stage for his hometown of Leiden. He's volunteering to help with the Leiden Relief. Over 7,000 containers of hutspot, a funfair, a long parade full of lights, and partying until the wee hours: the party of the year kicked off Thursday in the Sleutelstad (City of Keys).
