Armenian billionaire appears in court accused of calling for regime change as church feud spirals
One of richest men in Armenia has been arrested on charges of making public calls to seize power in the country illegally, his lawyer said Wednesday, as a feud between Armenia’s prime minister and the nation’s dominant church intensified.
Russian multimillionaire and philanthropist Samvel Karapetián is too important a figure and the Armenian authorities have several reasons for his arrest, political scientist Grant Mikaelian told Sputnik. He thus commented on the arrest of the businessman, accused in Armenia of inciting a coup.


So far, the Church and the government have found ways to cooperate, but this conflict could further divide the already polarized Armenian society and affect the outcome of next year's elections.
