iPhone users can now add US passport info to their digital wallets
Apple's Digital ID lets travelers use encrypted passport data on iPhones at 250+ TSA checkpoints for faster identity verification during domestic flights, enhancing security and privacy.
- On Wednesday, Apple unveiled a Digital ID that lets iPhone users add U.S. passport information to Apple Wallet for scanning at airport readers during the holiday travel season.
- The rollout will begin in beta at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at more than 250 U.S. airports, following Apple’s prior support for driver’s licenses in 12 states and Puerto Rico and TSA’s acceptance of mobile IDs in at least 16 states and Puerto Rico.
- To add a passport, open the iPhone's Wallet app, tap the plus sign, select the Digital ID option, scan the passport photo page, place the iPhone on the passport's embedded chip, and complete a selfie with facial and head movements to verify identity.
- At the TSA kiosk, travelers double-click the phone's side button, tap the Digital ID, hold the iPhone or Apple Watch to the reader, review requested fields while the reader takes a photo, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID; TSA says this speeds processing.
- Apple says passport data is encrypted on-device and protected by face or fingerprint scan; Digital ID cannot replace a physical passport, and the TSA website provides more information.
