New Delhi: Most humans on the planet possess what is known as the wild-type CCR5 gene, that produces a receptor used by human immune system cells. This receptor is exploited by HIV. Humans from the Black Sea region carry a mutated version of the gene with 32 missing base pairs, called CCR5-Δ32, that disrupts the receptor, and closes the back door that HIV uses to enter human cells.
