Almost three in four parking app users face problems: Survey

A survey of 1,709 UK drivers found 73% of parking app users face issues like poor signal and app failures amid councils removing payment machines to cut costs.

  • In the past year, a survey of 1,709 UK drivers found 73% who used parking apps experienced problems, as many local councils removed payment machines to save money.
  • The Government launched the National Parking Platform in May, with 10 local authorities including Manchester, Liverpool and Coventry already using it, while English councils recorded a £1.2 billion parking surplus over 2024-25.
  • Seventy per cent of drivers who use parking apps reported a lack of mobile signal, and 36% said apps failed to recognise the car park, the RAC said.
  • The RAC said `no-one should be forced` and urged parking operators to offer at least two payment methods, while advising drivers to keep evidence of payment attempts and update their apps.
  • Most respondents prefer cards or cash, with only 30% favouring apps, while drivers face inconsistent rules and clunky experiences requiring repeated registrations; just 6% use QR-scan payments, which the RAC warned can risk `quishing`.
