ALDI to Remove Another 44 Ingredients From Products
- On April 22, Aldi announced plans to eliminate 44 artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, and sweeteners from its private-label products by December 2027, expanding its restricted ingredient list from 13 to 57 items.
- More than 90% of Aldi's products are private label; the move builds on a 2015 decision removing certified synthetic colors, ensuring all items "must meet the company" rigorous sourcing, testing, and ingredient standards.
- Included in the phase-out are bromated flour, titanium dioxide, and neotame; the Environmental Working Group warns that BHA and BHT can damage DNA, while other substances are linked to hormone and cancer risks.
- Federal scrutiny of food additives has intensified under U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, as the Food and Drug Administration re-evaluates several chemicals industry-wide.
- Walmart and Target are also addressing ingredient lists, with Walmart planning to remove 11 synthetic dyes by January 2027 and Target banning synthetic colors in cereals by May, while Aldi's Chief Commercial Officer Scott Patton works to maintain "quality benchmarks.
