- On Tuesday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey underwent a "minor procedure" at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery after doctors discovered fluid pressing against her lung, her office reported.
- Ivey had been dealing with left-side discomfort for about three weeks and recently began experiencing shortness of breath, prompting her to visit her primary care physician earlier Tuesday.
- While the condition was not considered emergent, Ivey wanted the procedure done promptly so she could "quickly get back to 100% to wrap up the 2026 Regular Session," said spokeswoman Gina Maiola.
- The 81-year-old Republican governor will be monitored at Baptist Medical Center South "in the coming days" out of an abundance of caution, according to her office.
- Ivey, a cancer survivor, previously announced in 2019 that she was undergoing radiation for lung cancer, with her office confirming in 2020 that scans indicated she was free of disease.
