Air India: DGCA probe after engine sucks in cargo container at Delhi airport

A cargo container fell from a ground vehicle and was ingested by an Air India A350 engine during taxiing, damaging the engine but causing no injuries, officials said.

  • On Thursday around 05:25, an Air India Airbus A350 taxiing at Indira Gandhi International Airport ingested a cargo container into its No. 2 engine, damaging the engine and grounding the aircraft.
  • A BWFS tug carrying containers crossed a taxiway intersection at IGIA when one wheel of a container dolly came off, causing the container to fall; the vehicle operator then left with remaining cargo.
  • Air India said `However, the container which fell was left behind and it got ingested into the No. 2 engine of the aircraft,` with around 240 passengers onboard who are all safe, while DGCA photos show engine and taxiway damage later cleared.
  • The DGCA has opened a formal investigation, and Air India warned the grounded Airbus A350 fleet of six aircraft may disrupt select long-haul routes including London and New York.
  • The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of ground safety after DGCA findings last June, with marginal visibility from dense fog and Iran temporary airspace closure affecting three Air India flights.
