Air India, Akasa hike fuel surcharge as costs climb

Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air said higher aviation fuel costs are pushing up ticket prices, with Akasa’s domestic surcharge reaching Rs 1,150.

  • On October 9, Air India and Air India Express will implement increased fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights, raising ticket costs for passengers booking with the Tata Group airlines.
  • Aviation Turbine Fuel prices, which constitute around 40 per cent of airline operating costs, have surged amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and sustained energy market volatility, forcing carriers to adjust fares.
  • Domestic fuel surcharges will range between ₹400 and ₹1,200 depending on distance, while international fees are set at $55 for West Asia and the Middle East, $135 for Europe, $210 for Australia, and $215 for North America.
  • Akasa Air also introduced a domestic fuel surcharge ranging from ₹375 to ₹1,150 and a ₹2,500 international fee, following IndiGo's recent 37–50 per cent hike in domestic fuel surcharges across the industry.
  • Travellers booking flights from October 9 should verify final fare breakdowns before completing purchases, as base airfares alone do not reflect the new surcharges; Akasa Air said it took a "measured approach to partially offset the impact.
