A Mississippi monkey sanctuary helps veterans with PTSD find peace
PERKINSTON, MISSISSIPPI, AUG 4 – The sanctuary, licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has helped veterans with PTSD find healing through caring for rescued monkeys since opening last October.
- In October, Air Force veteran April Stewart and her husband established the Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary on their 15-acre property in Perkinston, Mississippi, with three large enclosures.
- After first rescuing and rehoming monkeys, Stewart enlisted volunteers, including several veterans, and with two exotic-animal veterinarians formed a governing foundation for Mississippi’s only USDA-licensed primate sanctuary.
- John Richard, Army veteran, says Louie’s chirps of 'Oh, I love you' and the sanctuary helped more than any PTSD treatment in over 20 years.
- Volunteers, many of them veterans, report that bonding with the primates has taught them to trust again, Stewart says.
- Next summer, Stewart plans to open the sanctuary to the public for guided educational tours, aiming to provide a natural habitat and reunite primates with their own species.
