Ukraine Designates Iran’s IRGC as Terrorist Organization Following EU Lead

Ukraine followed the EU in labeling Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group for aiding Russia with over 8,000 Shahed drones used in attacks, Kyiv said.

  • On Feb. 2, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Ukraine designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, following its addition to the Security Service of Ukraine list on Jan. 30.
  • Following the EU's Jan. 29 designation, officials said the move aligned Kyiv with the European Union, which labeled the IRGC as a terrorist organization on Jan. 29.
  • The IRGC is described as a powerful, elite branch of Iran's armed forces established after 1979, already labeled a terrorist group by the U.S., and Ukrainian officials cited Iran's supply of Shahed strike drones used in attacks.
  • Looking beyond Kyiv, protests in Madrid on Jan. 22 and Zelensky said, `The whole world sees what is happening in Iran, how many people have been killed, and how the Iranian regime has contributed to the spread of war and violence in the region and the world.
