Chargesheet Filed Against Yasin Malik in 1990 Sarla Bhat Rape, Murder Case
The agency charged five JKLF operatives in the abduction and murder case, including jailed chief Yasin Malik, after the probe was reopened 10 months ago.
- On Monday, the State Investigation Agency filed an over 700-page chargesheet naming Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik as a key accused in the 1990 kidnapping and murder of Kashmiri Pandit nurse Sarla Bhat.
- Investigators established that Bhat's 1990 killing at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences was not isolated but part of a "larger terrorist conspiracy orchestrated under the command and control of the JKLF."
- The chargesheet details offences under the Ranbir Penal Code and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act , 1987, implicating Malik, Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi, and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo.
- While three accused—Sheikh, Sofi, and Taploo—are deceased, authorities initiated legal proceedings against absconding suspect Chalkoo, who "pulled the trigger" and is believed to be in Pakistan.
- The SIA described the chargesheet, filed 36 years after the crime, as a "historic milestone" in prosecuting legacy terror cases, asserting that "time can never become a shield for terrorism.
