YouTube quietly erased more than 700 videos showing Israeli human rights violations
YouTube removed over 700 videos from three Palestinian rights groups after US sanctions linked to their cooperation with the International Criminal Court, human rights advocates say.
- On Tuesday, YouTube terminated the accounts of Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, which posted over 700 videos alleging Israeli violations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
- The removals followed a US sanctions-triggered review after the US government imposed sanctions in early October for cooperation with the International Criminal Court , a YouTube spokesman said.
- The removed material included over 700 videos posted by Al-Haq, Al Mezan and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, featuring investigations into killings, torture, and a documentary on children killed on a Gaza beach; some videos remain visible elsewhere.
- Human rights advocates said the deletions silence Palestinian voices, remove evidence without warning, and affected NGOs warned terminating channels limits their mission and audience reach.
- The ICC is investigating Israel for genocide, while archivists warn digital evidence is fragile, making deletions especially harmful for accountability efforts, Alex Foley said.
