China's military is undergoing an unprecedented internal showdown: President Xi Jinping has removed a fifth of the military leadership in recent months, including generals who were once his most loyal allies. According to a Bloomberg analysis, there has been no purge on this scale since Mao, which is simultaneously weakening the military's strike capability and strengthening the president's power.
During China's third term, Xi Jingping disappeared from public space or was investigated by 14 of the 79 generals he had previously personally appointed, Bloomberg estimated that there had been no such cases during his 20 years in office.
