Xbox Is Building A Film Division, And It's Putting Minecraft In The Driver's Seat
The division will oversee film, television, merchandise, partnerships and live experiences as Xbox seeks to extend its franchises beyond gameplay.
- On Thursday, Xbox announced the launch of a new division called XP designed to expand its video game franchises beyond gaming into film, television, consumer products, and live events.
- Drawing on the success of A Minecraft Movie and Amazon's Fallout series, the division formalizes four investment areas: Pictures, Products, Partnerships, and Places.
- Kayleen Walters, a former Lucasfilm executive and A Minecraft Movie producer, will lead XP, while Maria Angelidou-Smith joins as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft on October 19.
- Rather than operating as a production company, XP will align Xbox intellectual property with external partners for projects including the Call of Duty film and a 2027 Minecraft theme park.
- This structural change follows a broader 'reset' of the Xbox business under CEO Asha Sharma, which has included significant restructuring and layoffs to adapt to the changing games sector.
