World champ Malinin takes lead at Skate Canada

Ilia Malinin set a new free skate world record with 228.97 points and extended his unbeaten streak to two years, winning Skate Canada by 76.6 points.

  • On Sunday in Saskatoon, Ilia Malinin, two-time reigning world champion, broke the world free-skate record to win Skate Canada and maintain his two-year unbeaten streak.
  • Despite his youth, Malinin landed 6 quad jumps and a triple axel during his free skate, missing Beijing Games qualification because of his age.
  • His free-skate score of 228.97 surpassed the previous 224.92, and Malinin finished with an overall total of 335.30 while Aleksandr Selevko scored 257.21 for second place.
  • Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, Canadian world silver medalists, won their sixth consecutive Skate Canada title with 202.89 points despite free dance mistakes, while Allison Reed and Saulius Ambrulevicius of Lithuania finished second with 200.92.
  • Skate Canada is the third of six Grand Prix events, the NHK Trophy is next, and Malinin will be favored to win the Grand Prix Final in December in Nagoya, Japan.
