Woman who filmed young girl driving car in Aberdeenshire village ordered to undertake unpaid work

CRIMOND, ABERDEENSHIRE, SCOTLAND, JUL 29 – Sophie-Leigh Gemmell was ordered to complete 134 hours of unpaid work after admitting reckless conduct for letting a child drive barefoot in poor weather conditions.

  • On Monday, Sophie-Leigh Gemmell was handed a 134-hour community payback order at Peterhead Sheriff Court, to be completed within 12 months.
  • Last month, Sophie-Leigh Gemmell admitted culpable and reckless conduct after allowing an under-10 girl to drive barefoot in bad weather on 10 July last year.
  • Amid sentencing submissions, the defence agent said Gemmell’s `behaviour was completely foolish` due to `poor decision-making`, highlighting her difficult family circumstances and history of domestic abuse.
  • During sentencing, Sheriff Alan Sinclair said Gemmell and the girl were `very fortunate` to avoid serious harm, despite her actions being `reckless in the extreme` but a custodial sentence `disproportionate`.
  • The court heard Gemmell has no previous criminal record, and a social work report found she was of no risk of further offending and does not need supervision.
